• COURSE TOPICS

  APICS CPIM Part 1

  Basic Supply Chain Management: This is a 10-week introductory course for production and inventory management personnel and CPIM candidates. It provides basic definitions and concepts for planning and controlling the flow of materials into, through and out of an organization. It explains fundamental relationships among the activities that occur in the supply chain from suppliers to customers. In addition, the course addresses types of manufacturing systems, forecasting, master planning, material requirements planning, capacity management, production activity control, purchasing, inventory management, distribution, quality management and just-in-time manufacturing.

  Module topics include:

  • Businesswide Concepts: Discuss basic businesswide concepts, including the various production environments used for the transformation process and financial fundamentals. Also in this section, three of the more common companywide management approaches (MRP II, JIT and TQM) are presented together with their interrelationships.
  • Demand Planning: Learn about demand planning, including a basic understanding of markets and customer expectations, the definition of value and a fundamental overview of demand forecasting.
  • Transformation of Demand Into Supply: Review the design, management and control of the transformation process. The first part of this course includes the design of products, processes and information systems used for planning. The rest of the course includes fundamentals of planning systems, execution controls and performance measures.
  • Supply: Focused learning and discussion regarding supply issues, including the concepts of inventory, purchasing and physical distribution.

  APICS CPIM Part 2

  Advanced Supply Chain for Internal Operations (Formerly MPR, DSP, SMR and ECO): This 15-week course will prepare you for the second exam required to attain your CPIM certification. Successful completion of CPIM Part 1 is required before registering for this course.
  
  Module topics include:

  • Master Planning of Resources (MPR): Explore processes used to develop sales and operations plans, identify and assess internal and external demand and forecasting requirements, and effect an achievable master schedule consistent with business policies, objectives and resource constraints.
  • Detailed Scheduling and Planning (DSP): Focus on material and capacity scheduling and planning. Discuss inventory management as it relates to order planning and customer service. Learn a detailed explanation of material requirements planning (MRP), a technique suitable for use in job shops. Gain an understanding of another material planning technique: material-dominated scheduling, which is applicable to process industries and other mature production environments. Learn about capacity requirements planning in detail and other capacity-planning techniques, including processor-dominated scheduling.
  • Strategic Management of Resources (SMR): Learn how to choose methodologies and techniques for specific needs, and acquire an appreciation for the integration nature of operations.
  • Execution and Control of Operations (ECO): Gain expertise in prioritizing and sequencing work, executing work plans, implementing controls, reporting activity results, and evaluating and providing feedback on performance. Review techniques for scheduling and controlling production and process operations. Understand the execution of quality initiatives, continuous improvement plans and controlling and handling inventories. Learn how to evaluate performance and collect data for effective feedback.

  Yes, you can attend both courses at the same time. It is a lot of work, but it is doable!

  Do I need to take the exam after class or will classwork and tests satisfy the certification requirement?

  These courses are certification exam preparation programs only. For exam and certification eligibility, please refer to www.apics.org/certification for additional information.

  Do I get the certification after CPIM Part 1 and 2?

  After completion of both of these courses, you will need to take an additional exam (not included in CSUSM fees or course). Please refer to www.apics.org/certification for additional information.
